I lost my provisional licence

Can I get a replacement license if I lost a learner permit? What is a provisional license? The quickest and most efficient way to replace your lost provisional licence is by applying online.


Head over to the DVLA website and fill out a replacement licence form. This process also applies if your licence is damaged or destroyed.

If you have lost your provisional card be a resident of Great Britain not be disqualified from driving for any reason pay £by MasterCar Visa, Electron, Maestro or Delta debit or credit card have a valid UK passport or other form of identity have your National Insurance number if known provide. If you lost your Provisional Driving licence , or it is damaged or destroye you can get a replacement online. If it is stolen you need to contact the police first.


Although you may not hold a full driving licence , you still need to apply for a replacement provisional driving licence if you lose your green photo card. If your current driving licence or learner permit is lost , stolen, damaged or deface you should apply to the National Driver Licence Service (NDLS) for a replacement. The replacement licence or permit is a copy of your original driving licence or learner permit.

If there are any special driving licence codes on your original licence or permit (for example that you must wear glasses when driving), the replacement will also show these codes. Any penalty points on your provisional licence that have not expired will be carried over to your full licence when you pass your test. However, your licence will be cancelled if you get any. Unfortunately if you turn up on the day without a complete provisional driving licence , then you will not be able to take your test and will have lost the fee. If you know your test is coming up and you have lost your licence , re-arrange the test as soon as possible to avoid being charged. It means scammers could make a copy with a new photo then. After I acquired my provisional license (10ish years ago), I moved around a lot and can no longer find either part.

I mentioned that you were a married female so also would have a change of name and he thought the form allowed for that too. My daughter is still waiting for her provisional licence they received the form back on the 6th July as it was signed for as we did special delivery, but the licence tracker says awaiting form. Think it asked for my passport number as proof of identity, possibly because photo licences had been introduced in the meantime! Your driver number remains the same. I have just had to replace a lost licence , get a new photo, change the address AND change the name all at the same time.


Thanks for your comment. The DVLA can only take a photo from your passport on your first application for a provisional licence. If you are only changing your address we will reuse the image that is currently on your licence as there is years validity remaining on it.


There is no need to submit a new photo for a change of address application. You now need to send your provisional driving licence back to the DVLA within the next two years. You can read more about the changes here.
