How to rebuild carburetters? What is the correct oil level for a SU carburettor? These are known as CSK ( carburetter service kits). For laymen, the carburettor is a mysterious word often lumped in with a lot of car parts and truck parts, and it is known to be important without any real understanding of what you need it for. Whether you have a truck or a car , look on eBay for SU carburettor parts to help you service your vehicle.


To reassemble the jet, slide the metal ferrule into the end of the jet tube. Fit the metal washer over the en then the rubber seal.

Insert the tube into the float chamber. On dustproof SUs , which have a hole in the dashpot neck instead of the top, the oil should be i in. No leakage, cheap, easy fit (took about minutes) and they fit to an unworn section of the spindle, plus they will last for ever.


Connected throttle cable and choke, the car started right up with choke pulled out let the engine run for a few then pushed choke back in and the car stalled immediately, crushing my spirits. Today’s post describes a recent rebuild on a pair of SU Type H-carburetors. Although most Type H-carbs that I rebuild are for Volvo Bengines (PV-444s and 544s), this particular pair of carbs came from an MGA.


The most notable difference between Type H-Volvo and MGA carbs is that the Volvo carbs go on the passenger (right) side of the engine, whereas the MGA carbs go on the driver’s (left) side. These carburetors are identified by letter prefix which indicates the float type. SU carburettors were provided in several “throat sizes” in both inch and millimetre measurement. H”, “HD”, “HS”, “HIF”, “HV”, “OM” and “KIF”.


H” types have float bowl with an arm cast into its base. Finding SU (Skinner Union) needles to make your car run right under all throttle conditions is a trying experience at best. Rebushing carburetor bodies and fitting new throttle shafts is a major part of a proper carb rebuild that is often overlooked. Vacuum leaks due to worn bodies and shafts cause rough idle, poor performance and poor fuel economy.

Island Automotion Ltd. The root of the problem is that these HD-carburetors are wider between the outside ends of the bushings than most of the other, more typical, SUs that I usually rebuild. The extra width in longer bushings, and any misalignment in those longer bushings increases the tendency for the throttle shafts to drag or bind in the bushings. Clean the inside of the carb. The bushings and shafts can be replace but it requires some machining.


Check operation of the throttle. Make sure all components of the ignition system (timing, plugs, points, and wires) are properly adjusted and working well, and that the valves are adjusted to specification before trying to adjust the carburetors. Does anybody know where I can get a service kit for it? Or recommend somebody up here in JHB to service the carbs for me. It has sprung a leak on one of the screws but I think that it is high time to have them serviced.
